South Yorkshire Archaeology Service are advisors to the Councils of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield, and also offer advice to a wide range of other land managers, as well as developers.
They also maintain the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) for South Yorkshire. This holds information on the known archaeological sites and finds in South Yorkshire and they have a database that makes the information searchable by site type, e.g. hillfort, or date, e.g. medieval, or by a specific location, e.g. parish. This digital information can now be searched online via the Heritage Gateway.
The SMR also holds copies of reports on excavation and recording work carried out since about 1990, often by commercial units. More recent reports may be available digitally via the ADS Grey Literature Library.
For detailed enquiries that cannot be answered by these online resources, you can make an appointment to consult the SMR in person.
The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a national initiative to record finds, principally those made by metal detectorists but also finds made by other members of the public. Each area has a Finds Liaison Officer, who can identify and record such finds; the information gathered is then added to the PAS national database. Check the SYTT events calendar or PAS website for forthcoming events.
Archaeological collections are maintained by the main local museum services:
