A Walking Tour of Walkley with Walkley Historians for The Victorian Society, South Yorkshire

Saturday, 17th August 2024

10:30 am to 12:30 pm

St Mary’s Church, Howard Road, Walkley

The Walkley Historians are going to guide us on a walk through Victorian Walkley. This will show how hill top fields west of Sheffield grew into a thriving community during the Victorian era as a result of the Freehold Land Society Movement – an innovative land buying and mortgage scheme which enabled working class families to own their own homes and gardens. The people, places and events you will see and hear about are linked to the streets, schools, places of worship and pubs of the area which all flourished within the suburbs of Walkley in the Victorian age.

The Victorian Walkley walk will begin inside St Mary’s Church, Howard Road, Walkley S6 3RX at 10.30 am. Participants are invited to meet up in the Church from 10.00 am, where The Walkley Historians will have display materials about Walkley history to browse. If there are any non-walkers accompanying the group, they will be most welcome to stay here with members of the Walkley Historians whilst the walk takes place. Disabled access, toilets and tea/coffee will all be available.

St Mary’s does not have a car park, but there is ‘single yellow line’ street parking on Saturdays on the opposite side of Howard Road to the Church. The 95/95a bus stops close by – the nearest stop is called Howard Road/Hadfield Street.

Copies of The Walkley Historians’ books Walkley Ways, Walkley Wars (£3, includes book and DVD) and Victorian Walkley (£10.00) will be available for cash purchase before or after the walk.

The walk will finish at approximately 12.30 pm on Bole Hill Road, close to the junction with Rivelin Street and to 95/95a bus stops for the return journey towards town. There are several cafes and pubs along the half-mile walk back to the starting point for those who would like to stay in Walkley for refreshments and further exploration.

The walk leaders are two members of Walkley Historians: Hilary Evans and Hugh Waterhouse. Hugh was a founder member of Walkley Historians and continues to be a mainstay of the group, generous with his own local research and providing guidance and training for others. He regularly gives talks and runs guided walks for Walkley Historians and other local groups. Hilary is also a very active member of the Walkley Historians and other Walkley community groups, giving talks and leading walks. She is a leader of the Ruskin’s Reach walk, which takes place this year on Friday 5th June as part of the 2024 Walkley Festival, which runs from Friday 28th to Saturday 7th July.

Walkley Festival printed programmes are now widely available in local shops and libraries, and online at https://welcometowalkley.org/walkley-festival/

Please note that this walk is not flat – there will be some ups and downs.
