Sunday, 15th October 2023
11:00 am to 3:00 pm
The Walled Garden, Wortley Hall, S35 7DB
Wortley Hall Walled Garden will be celebrating national Apple Day on Sunday 15th October from 11am to 3pm. Visitors can come and explore the walled garden and its orchard, try some of the many different varieties of apple, have a go at making apple juice and buy fruit and other freshly harvested produce (cash only). Visitors are also invited to bring their own apples and pears for tasting and juicing.
Wortley Hall Walled Garden has over 40 different varieties of apple, including many local varieties specific to Yorkshire. Dogsnout, Grandpa Buxton, Yorkshire Aromatic and Grenadier are just a few of the evocatively named heritage varieties found in the orchard. The choice of apples available to shoppers is usually very limited though there are in fact over a 2,500 native apple varieties in the UK out of the 7,00 that exist worldwild and the varieties of shape, colouring, taste and texture will be a revelation to many.
Entry is free but there will be apples, juice and other fresh produce available and refreshments including apple cake. Cash payments only.
