From the late eighteenth century until the 1930s the larger coal and iron companies in the North Midland Coalfield built extensively to house their workers. Some of the resulting settlements have been characterised as ‘model villages’; most do not fit that description. This talk will look at how this type of housing developed, first on the exposed coalfield in Derbyshire and later on the concealed coalfield in Nottinghamshire and the Doncaster district of South Yorkshire.
Philip Riden is an honorary research fellow and retired member of the academic staff at Nottingham University.
Doors open at 7.00pm and the start time is 7.30pm prompt.
