File making: exploring a great Sheffield precision industry

File making was one of Sheffield’s largest industries often carried out by outworkers in the suburbs. This workshop tells the story of an industry that employed over 5, 500 people. All work was done by hand, striking 60 to 80 blows a minute until replaced by machines in the 1870s.

This is the rescheduled talk that was postponed from 2022.
