What connects 12th century Benedictine monks, Admiral Lord Nelson, and The Brownies? Come visit St Mary’s church, also known as ‘Minster on the Moors’, a grade 1 listed church at the heart of Ecclesfield.
Join us on guided tours through Ecclesfield’s 2,000-year history. Visit the 7th century Anglo-Saxon stone cross, once hidden pre-reformation altar, and memorial to a 17th century knight. Learn about the symbology of hatchments and the battle-ready armaments. Hear stories about the famous Gatty family and influential women who helped shape the village. Climb the stairs of St Mary’s iconic clocktower and meet the bell ringers. Before you leave, enjoy the café nestled within these ancient stone walls.
Join us during Heritage Open Days (various opening times, Tuesday 15th, Wednesday 16th, Friday 18th, Saturday 19th, Sunday 20th) and also our launch event for Friends of St Mary’s, on Saturday 19th September 4pm.
