A five mile walk from Deepcar. We will climb to Wharncliffe Chase, take a clockwise route across the Chase and return via Wharncliffe Crags.
As part of Sheffield Festival of the Outdoors 2022, Stocksbridge Walkers are Welcome are leading a guided walk on the Sheffield/Barnsley boundary. We will start opposite the Lowood Club on Station Road in Deepcar – close to bus stops for the 201, 57, SL1 & SL1a services.
This 5/6 mile walk will take us through woods to Wharncliffe Chase before returning along Wharncliffe Crags – the Victorian home of rock climbing in the UK.
Wharncliffe Crags has a long history of rock climbing and was at the forefront of the birth of the sport in the 1880s.
The geology led to the area being designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1988. There are also Iron Age and Roman quern workings in the area.
