Dig Where You Stand is presenting an immersive screening of the award-winning shadow puppet film, Hunter 77. Created by multimedia artist Cole Morris, this film is based on the life of Joe Phillips, a Jamaican steelworker who, in 1971, built a boat from scrap metal so he could leave Sheffield and return to Jamaica.
Using intricate shadow puppet design, stop motion and real audio from local archives, Cole reimagines this journey and takes audiences through an epic voyage of sea serpents, old soldiers and space rockets. In doing so, his film explores themes of immigration, war, displacement and the enduring pull of home.
This event forms part of Migration Matters Festival and is in collaboration between Dig Where You stand and Morris3Productions, hosted by Yorkshire Artspace. It is the first time the full film has been shown in Sheffield, with the initial installment displayed during the DWYS Biennial 2024.
The screening is accompanied by a live musical soundtrack performed by composer Chris Funguz and friends. There will also be an immersive installation of the artwork created for the film, and a Q&A led by Dig Where You Stand’s creative director Désirée Reynolds.
