Tony Ball describes how the water-powered mills and grinding wheels of Sheffield produced iron and steel goods of all sorts that were world-renowned for centuries. The water system of each site relied on a weir but the weir is often unheralded or completely ignored. This is an attempt to fill the gap: when were they made, how were they made. who made them?
