Join us for a talk by Loveday Herridge with real ale and Victorian light music.

A talk about the Sheffield brewer and benefactor, John Newton Mappin. Mappin founded St John’s Ranmoor, gave generously to many local charities and established the first civic art collection, the Mappin Art Gallery. He not only gave his extensive private collection of pictures to the city but endowed the building in which that collection was first exhibited.

Loveday Herridge, local historian, has written on Sheffield’s subscription libraries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Her work is published in Before the Public Library: Reading, Community and Identity in the Atlantic World, 1650-1850 (2017). She now turns her attention to the rather enigmatic figure of Newton Mappin who in many ways transformed the physical and cultural landscape of our city.

This event is part of the Scissors Paper Stone, a community history project which explores the origins of St John’s Church in Ranmoor. For more information visit our website.
