JUHS bi-monthly meeting – September 2025

September’s guest speakers will tell us about an innovative combination of historical research and heritage craft and give us an update on the future of the Central Library and Graves Gallery.

Rhiannon Thomas is a historian and embroiderer, and her project “Mapping Meersbrook” uses historic maps and local historical research to inspire intricate stitched artworks. She will bring samples of her remarkable work, and it promises to be a great introduction to this highly creative approach.

Francesca Frascina from Sheffield City Council will introduce their new feasibility project on the Central Library and Graves Gallery. This focuses on designing library, art gallery and other services for the future and how the Council’s commitment to this much-loved building can be part of delivering these.

Getting there: Leah’s Yard, 20 – 22 Cambridge Street, Sheffield, S1 4HP is part of the Heart of the City development. The City Hall tram stop (Yellow and Blue services) is about 250m away, and there are bus stops served by many routes on West Street and Rockingham Street, including the free Sheffield Connect bus service that links to other stops around the city centre. There are small long-stay car parks at Carver Street and Rockingham Street, and the nearest multi-storey car park is the NCP on Wellington Street.

Finding the Assembly Rooms: If attending in person, the Assembly Rooms can be accessed from the corner of the main courtyard, under the tank (see arrow on the photo).

There is an intercom – 116 Enter (a different intercom to the one outside on Cambridge Street). This will buzz the intercom in the room and someone can unlock the door. The Assembly Rooms is on the first floor. Easiest way to access it is to get in the lift which is in front of you when you enter the building, go up to the first floor, then the Assembly Rooms is directly in front of the lift when you exit. Alternatively you can use the stairs and follow the signs to the Assembly Rooms.

JUHS bi-monthly meetings are open to all, whatever their interest in heritage. They are an opportunity to hear from local heritage groups about their work and a great chance to make connections and to discuss problems and opportunities for Sheffield’s heritage. The agenda also includes a guest speaker and an update on what JUHS has been doing to promote a better-resourced and better-connected presentation of heritage. Most meetings are “hybrid”, so you can either attend in person or online via Zoom.
