JUHS bi-monthly meeting – September 2026

This month we take our bi-monthly meeting to the Northern office of Wessex Archaeology. Our guest speaker will be Jo Instone-Brewer, Terrestrial Geophysics Supervisor. Jo will be giving us an introduction to geophysics, an overview of the three main types of geophysical survey used in archaeology, and some examples of geophysical data from archaeological projects.

At the end of the meeting Natasha Bramall will offer an informal tour of the office to in-person attendees, including WA’s finds processing rooms, archive, and drying rooms.

We do hope to see you there, but if you’re not able to be there in person then as usual this will be a “hybrid” meeting. You can take part online via Google Meet using this link:

JUHS bi-monthly meetings are open to all, whatever their interest in heritage. They are an opportunity to hear from local heritage groups about their work and a great chance to make connections and to discuss problems and opportunities for Sheffield’s heritage.

Travelling to Wessex Archaeology

Arriving by car: It is no longer possible to turn left into Furnival Road from Derek Dooley Way or to drive from the city centre on Furnival Road. Please approach the office from Effingham Street (from the direction of Attercliffe/Meadowhall). A route from Park Square to WA’s offices is shown on the attached map

Parking: The carpark is still accessible and you will see a gap in the roadworks to enter. Please be aware that cars will be double parked and you will need to list your car registration on arrival. Wessex Archaeology staff will be around to help people with parking before the meeting. Please aim to arrive between 10:15-10:30am. There is limited nearby on street parking due to the roadworks.

Arriving on foot or by bus or tram: Pedestrians can still use the pavement to walk to the office from Derek Dooley Way. The nearest bus stops are on the Wicker, about 10-15 minutes’ walk away. The nearest tram stop, Fitzalan Square, is a 15-20 minutes’ walk away.

Arriving by cycle: Cyclists can use the cobweb bridge. There is secure cycle parking on site.
