A formal unveiling of the blue plaque and accompanying talks to celebrate the achievements of medical pioneer, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu
Mary Wortley Montagu inspired a medical revolution when she introduced smallpox inoculation from Turkey to Britain in 1721. This event is hosted by the Royal Society of Biology at Wentworth Castle (home of the Northern College). A blue plaque celebrating Mary’s pioneering role is to be unveiled at Northern College on July 15th, along with talks, discussions and a walking tour to the ‘Sun Monument’ which is the first monument to celebrate a woman’s intellectual achievement in Britain.
