Lunchtime Talk: Ernest Wright – The Resurgence of Sheffield Scissors

Join Jonathan Reid from Ernest Wright for a brief history of the Sheffield cutlery industry and learn how modernisation and global trade impacted scissor-making.

You’ll find out about the traditional machinery used in the workshop and why time-honoured techniques remain the best way to make high-quality scissors. You’ll also hear how Ernest Wright are making conscious efforts to keep traditional scissor-making thriving far into the future.

Jonathan Reid is Production Manager and a Putter (putter-togetherer) at Ernest Wright, Sheffield’s last remaining handmade scissor workshop. Trained by two of the UK’s remaining master-putters, he is fast learning everything there is to know about making scissors. Jonathan is also on the Board of Trustees at the Heritage Crafts Association.
