Neepsend not Kelham – exhibition of paintings by Paul Allender
Wednesday, 8th June 2022 - Friday, 24th June 2022
10:30 am to 5:30 pm
Yellow Arch Studios
Free
Paul Allender grew up in Neepsend in the 1950’s and 60’s. The theme of the show is his experience of childhood in Neepsend, a smoky place where all of the external walls were blackened by pollution from the steelworks.
The area has now been transformed into the fashionable go-to location for eating, drinking and music that we all know.
This huge change in S3 provides the backdrop to the exhibition. It reflects upon the culture Paul experienced growing up, and the transformations in society in the following decades.
Paul says “While the heritage of Sheffield 3 in the 50’s and 60’s is deep within me, I only directly refer to it in a small number of works. I spent the first 11 years of my life there and, of course, these are formative years. So, the work I have made as an adult – for me – reflects the experiences of growing up there. Even those paintings that don’t seem to have any connection with S3 at all!”
Opens 8th June and runs until the 24th June.
Opening times are Wednesday to Sunday 10:30am – 5:30pm
Don’t miss the artist’s talk on Wednesday 15th June at 5:30pm.
