New book: Samuel Holberry – Revolutionary Democrat 1814-1842

Sheffield has every reason to be proud of its radical history, and Samuel Holberry, leader of the Chartist uprising in 1840, is a local hero, commemorated in the cascades in the city’s Peace Gardens. Now a new book by John Baxter & Steven Kay offers the definitive story of Holberry. They argue that the forces that he fought and which silenced him are still all around us, and that the fragility of democracy is means that we need to understand our history to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.
