Painted Fabrics Ltd, Little Norton – celebrating the centenary of the official opening

August 8th 2025, will mark the centenary of the official opening of Painted Fabrics Ltd (at Little Norton, Sheffield) by their patron HRH Princess Mary (Viscountess Lascelles). The small estate of cottages and workshops housed disabled ex-WW1 servicemen and their families. The ex-servicemen worked printing a varied range of textiles which were made into clothes and household items for sale.

Our reminiscence group are organising several events to mark the centenary, the first of which is a walk around the ‘Painted Fabrics’ site and a visit to the memorial room which was opened as part of the 75th anniversary of the opening. The site is now a small housing development off Little Norton Lane but it is still possible to find traces of the older site which was created from a WW1 women’s camp, part of the RFC/RAF’s No2 Northern Aircraft Repair Depot.  This is a bookable event with 20 places, the walk is on fairly level ground/ footpaths but there will be some standing around.
