A reading/performance of the writings of the Pen and Pencil Club.

The Pen and Pencil Club were Sheffield Quakers, writing at the time of Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in 1887: they debated many of the same issues as we do. Issues such as Monarchy, Republicanism, Irish questions, Commons and Lords, women’s rights, pollution and the environment. Not least, issues of legacy and how current generations will be seen by those who come after. Apparently, debates became so heated in PPC meetings, they banned politics entirely. But this proved impossible to enforce, as these gently humorous extracts amply demonstrate.
