An evening hosted by the Sheffield Eagles Heritage Project and Women in Rugby League as part of National Sporting Heritage Day.

A free screening of Power Meri – https://powermerifilm.com – an award winning documentary following “Papua New Guinea’s first national women’s rugby league team, the PNG Orchids, on their journey to the 2017 World Cup in Australia. These trailblazers must beat not only the sporting competition, but also intense sexism, a lack of funding, and national prejudice to reach their biggest stage yet.

The film screening will be followed a short Question and Answer session involving a panel including Rebecca Stevens – former GB international – and members of the Sheffield Eagles’ women’s teams from two eras to share their experiences of playing rugby league. The original Sheffield Eagles team was formed in 1989 with the team re-established in 2022.

The screening is free of charge, with refreshments from 6.30pm, the screening at 7.00pm and a question and answer session afterwards from 8.30pm. There will then be a chance from 9pm onwards to stay and gather in the bar below the screening and socialise.
