Talk: Sweet Remembrance – Confectioners of Sheffield General Cemetery

Discover a previously unresearched aspect of local history unearthed and explored by a group of passionate volunteers at Sheffield General Cemetery – the story of the city’s pioneering confectioners.

Led by Andrew Littlewood, the volunteers have shed light on the stories of the confectioners who reside in the cemetery. Names like Bassett, Butler, Dixon and Simpkin may be familiar, but families like Charlesworth, Lodge, Melhern and Reckless not so. Equally, the products of the confectionery industry, like British wine, twelfth cakes, funeral biscuits, turtle soup, comfits and ‘spice’, are just as fascinating as the people that made and sold them.

The book, Sweet Remembrance – The Confectioners of Sheffield General Cemetery will be available to purchase after the talk.

This talk complements the current Sweet Remembrance display at Weston Park Museum, which continues until 12 June 2023.
