“The Cutlers of Hallamshire 1297-1624” talk

South Yorkshire Industrial History Society talk.

As the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire enters its fifth century, this talk goes back to the start of Sheffield’s metalworking journey to uncover where this local specialised industry originated. Starting with the earliest records in Sheffield history, this talk will chart the complex journey through to the foundation of the Cutlers Company in 1624 involving local landowners, the manor court, parish church, church burgess, town trust, taxation, national government rules, waterwheels and the needs of local cutlers to defend their craft and provide for their livelihoods.
