The History of Sheffield’s Hospitals – from wealth or workhouse, to welfare

The Hospital is one of the most vital assets of any city and most of us, one way or another, have come into contact with it in our lives. Maybe we have worked in it, been patients in it, supported family and friends through it,  and appreciate the availability of such skills on our doorstep.

Dr Jenny Stephenson will give a fascinating overview of the history of Sheffield’s hospitals. Some started as workhouses;  some founded on benevolence and determination by philanthropists, be they doctors or industrialists. Quite a number of these hospitals do not survive today, and many of the handsome buildings and surrounds have been repurposed, but the tale is still to be told of the vital part they played in the epidemics and wars and  social changes which happened in their day.

Dr Jenny retired recently from  a 40-year career in General Practice in the city and has personal experience of working in many of the hospitals in earlier times. She has the DHMSA, Diploma in the History of Medicine and gives talks regularly on associated topics. She is also a botanical artist at the Sheffield Botanical Gardens, focussing on medicinal plants there.
