The Sheffield Cross

Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group presents a talk by Professor John Moreland about his research on The Sheffield Cross. The cross is a 9th century example of an Anglo-Saxon decorated cross, of which examples can be seen in churchyards in Derbyshire. It was rediscovered being used as a quenching trough in a cutler’s workshop in Sheffield and later donated to the British Museum (1924). It is the most northerly example of a Mercian style cross.
