The Grounds, it is almost needless to remark, increase annually in their attractive features, as if art and nature were vying with each other for ascendancy.’

Join us for a second immersive exhibition of photographs and memories of Sheffield General Cemetery.

Sheffield General Cemetery used to be a pretty grim place where none but the brave would enter. Through the work of volunteers over the last thirty years, the Cemetery has become a wonderful park that the Victorians planned but never saw. They planted a vast range of interesting trees which are now mature and attract an abundance of wildlife.

Not only is Sheffield General Cemetery a richly historic site with very impressive buildings and monuments, our beautiful site is also a place of discovery which holds precious memories for those who visit.

Over the last year, Researchers at Sheffield General Cemetery Trust set about documenting personal stories from local residents, staff and volunteers to understand how our unique site has played a part in their lives. This exhibition is a taste of what you will find in our upcoming book which is full of rare photographs and lots of tales of childhood mischief, raising families, making music, making art and forging deeper connections with our City.

Our book, ‘Sheffield General Cemetery – Then & Now’ will be available to buy October 2023 as a limited, hardback edition run with a foreword from Peter Ross, author of ‘A Tomb with A View – The Stories & Glories of Graveyards’.

To register your interest and to reserve a copy please email emma.larsson-revitt@gencem.org. All proceeds from the book sales will go towards the work of Sheffield General Cemetery Trust.

Our cafe will be open selling hot drinks and sweet treats.
