Dr Peter Morgan and Dr David Dulieu have developed this lecture to be delivered by Peter at Portland Works on Wednesday 25th October. Peter will be exploring early work by the likes of Michael Faraday and contemporaries across the developed world, culminating in Harry Brearley’s great discovery in 1913. Peter will explain how parallel research was being carried out in other parts of the world in the race to develop new alloys.
This is the perfect theme on which to end our 2023 season of Portland Works lectures. It is the 10th anniversary of the community buy-out and the 110th anniversary of Harry Brearley’s discovery. The first ever cutlery made from stainless steel was manufactured at Portland Works in 1914.
