Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group

The Bolsterstone Archaeology and Heritage Group is a small but enthusiastic group based around the ancient village of Bolsterstone and the Stocksbridge area.  It was formed out of the excavations at Bolsterstone Castle in 2007-8, and has continued to hold talks programmes, workshops, visits and walks.  We have held zoom talks during the pandemic, but usually we meet in the hall at Christ Church on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge, on the third Wednesday of the month.

The Group is gaining experience in fieldwork and surveys on the moors west of Sheffield, where few studies have been carried out in the past, but there is rich archaeology – flint scatters, orthostats, stone circles and cairns, as well as ancient farmsteads and cruck-framed buildings.
