Friends of Grenoside Steel Works

Lying in North Sheffield is one of the most impressive and important steel works that pre dates anything else in the City to show how rural people were starting to experiment making steel to supplement their other interests such as farming. The five hole furnace are all that remain but are intact. The ‘cellar’ is a Grade 2 listed structure with other remnant infrastructure visible. Dating from the 1780’s it predates more industrialised sites such as Kelham Island, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet etc that were organised on large scale production some 20 years or so later in the City. The group have been researching the family connections associated with the Ashtons and Tingles.

The Friends welcome volunteers to help with their work of researching this important heritage site and making its history available to the public. Please email us if you are interested in helping or would just like to know more.

PLEASE NOTE: the works are in a private house and are only accessible by special arrangement with the owner.
