Wortley Walled Garden Growers
We are a voluntary group, formed in 2023 and we manage the restored Victorian kitchen garden at Wortley Hall. There are many interesting things of a historical nature about the walled garden including the way that steam was pumped through flues in the walls to heat them and enable the growing of more exotic species which gave prestige to the family at the Hall.
We have a twenty year old orchard containing many heritage and local Yorkshire varieties of fruit trees. The pear avenue contains trees that are over a hundred years old which were part of the original incarnation of the kitchen garden. A couple of these are quite rare.
We welcome visitors to the garden when we are open and would also like to grow our group of volunteers. Any level of experience is catered for and with different tasks to suite varying physical abilities. Details of opening times and a brief history of the garden can be found on our website.
See website for directions.
