Archaeology at Sheffield to close later than planned – the fight goes on
The Implementation Group (made of UEB members) has recommended, and the UEB agreed of course, that Archaeology at Sheffield will close at the end of 23/24. Archaeology will be split between History and Biological Sciences. Permanent academics will be moved to these departments with no compulsory redundancies. No details on investment or who will move where or how archaeology will continue as a viable discipline. After 6 months the Implementation Group will become the Transition Group and actually plan the move.
This is a better situation than the initial review proposed in May, but it is not the end. It is only through the strength of the Save Sheffield Archaeology campaign, the solidarity of our supporters and the threat of union action that we have reached this point. Thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign this year!!
