JUHS celebrates September with “Festival of the Mind” and “Crafting the Past”

It’s set to be a busy month as we bring two partnerships with the University of Sheffield to fruition, but we can still make time for our regular bi-monthly meeting.

In a series of talks curated by JUHS for Festival of the Mind 2024, local heritage groups will be presenting their proudest projects to a wider audience in the beautiful Spiegeltent, courtesy of Prof. Vanessa Toulmin and her team.

The Festival runs from 19th to 29th September 2024. Featured heritage talks include:

• Friday 20th September: Friends of Wardsend Cemetery – Stories from the Soil
• Tuesday 24th September: Friends of Graves Park – Ancient Norton Manor to Twentieth Century Graves Park
• Wednesday 25th September: Stephen Elliott, Llama Digital – Creating the Stan Shaw Little Mesters Heritage Trail and App
• Thursday 26th September: Joined Up Heritage Sheffield – A Heritage Strategy for Sheffield
• Friday 27th September: Hillsborough & Owlerton Local History Group – Hillsborough and Owlerton Retale: four cine films from the 1930s – 1950s

All talks are free, and run 12-1pm in the Spiegeltent in Barker’s Pool.

Also on 24th September at 4pm is our bi-monthly meeting, which you can attend in person at the National Emergency Services Museum or via Zoom. Dr. Gui Pozzer will tell us about “Crafting the Past”, a University of Sheffield-funded collaboration with Joined Up Heritage Sheffield to empower Sheffield’s communities to share their stories and memories about the city’s rich industrial past and heritage. Also speaking will be Dr. James Shaw, who is hoping to gain funding for for “Land, finance and status in Sheffield 1740-1820”,using handwriting recognition technology to create a database of transactions taken from the deeds registries held at Wakefield and Sheffield. It’s also an opportunity to meet our there is an opportunity to meet Dr. Tosh Warwick, our freelance consultant helping groups registered on our website to get the best out of JUHS, and looking for new groups to enrol. Crafting the Past has another outing on Wednesday 25th September at 4:30pm in the ICOSS Conference Room, Leavygrave Road. Gui Pozzer and Hakeem Ogunmuyiwa will be revealing some of the stories told to them, and there’ll be a chance to meet and hear from some of the participants. Free entry.
