Sheffield Conservation Advisory Group seeks new chair

After many years in the role, the current Chair, Philip Booth, is standing down at the end of 2025 and a new chair will be appointed in January 2026.

The election of the new Chair will be undertaken by the Group Members at the Meeting on 13th October 2025. The elected Chair will take up their role at the Group’s meeting on 12th January 2026.

Please Note – The role of Chair is non-political and therefore will not be open to elected members of the Council or to employed Officers of the Council.

The aims of the Group are:

• To participate in and promote the preservation and enhancement of the City’s built heritage and designated landscapes

• To promote high standards of design and conservation practice in Sheffield’s historic places

• To provide specialist advice to the Planning Service of the City Council on such matters.

This is achieved through working positively with Officers and Elected Members of the City Council, together with others who seek to protect the built heritage and provide advice by:

• Examining and commenting on individual planning applications that affect designated and non-designated heritage assets.

• Considering and commenting on draft policy, planning briefs and other documents that affect designated and non-designated heritage assets.

• Commenting on selected major developments at pre-application stage, through representation on the Sheffield Design Panel, where these impact on heritage assets.

The Group is independent and consists of representatives from national organisations having an interest in the historic environment that have representation within Sheffield, and local and regional organisations having an interest in the historic environment with a city-wide remit. There is also representation from the Council through a number of elected members.
