Dear Supporter, We have the following items in this edition of the JUHS newsletter: Best wishes, Joined Up Heritage Sheffield JUHS bi-monthly meetingsDon't miss our upcoming bi-monthly meeting on Tuesday 22nd July at 10:30am, when we will be the guests of the National Fairground and Circus Archive at the University of Sheffield's Western Bank Library. It promises to be a stimulating session, with presentations on the NFCA itself, on the Special Collections, and how to book a visit, make reproduction requests or access the collections online. For those attending in person there will also be a chance to see items from the collection. Getting there: The NFCA is at Western Bank Library which is immediately next to the Arts Tower. It can be reached directly from Bolsover Street/Winter Street and is a short walk from Brook Hill/Western Bank. Bus routes 10, 10a and 95 run along Bolsover Street/Winter Street and routes 51, 52 and 52a run up Western Bank and down Glossop Road. The University tram stop (Yellow and Blue services) is about 300m away. There is some on-street parking on Crookes Valley Road and Mushroom Lane, but it tends to fill up quickly. Our last bi-monthly meeting at Abbeyfield House in May was a great success, thanks to our hosts the Friends of Abbeyfield Park and Tim Neal's engaging tour of this lovely but little-known building. Conservation Area consultation - deadline 18th JulyPublic consultation on proposals for the City Centre and Kelham Island Conservation Areas, including extending the protected areas, will end on 18th July. We urge as many people as possible to have their say and give feedback on the proposals, which include extensions into Castlegate, West Street and Neepsend. Click here for full information. Portland Works Open Day 19th July - free tables for your groupPortland Works are offering free tables for local groups to publicise their activities in the Makerspace during their open day on Saturday 19th July from 11am to 4pm. Council for British Archaeology (Yorkshire) Autumn Seminar in SheffieldLooking to publicise your group to a new audience? Tables are available free of charge at the CBA(Y)'s Autumn seminar in Sheffield Workstation Creative Lounge on Saturday, October 18th 2025. The programme will feature archaeological studies on Yorkshire-based sites by students and recent graduates, as well as local students' studies on any archaeological subject. The Know Your Place exhibition shows their creative insights into Sheffield’s heritage and its lively neighbourhoods! Heritage activities over the summerGot an event you'd like to publicise? Click here to submit it to the JUHS website. There's plenty to do in the heritage world during the holiday season. Come along to the Portland Works Annual Open Day on Saturday 19th July 2025. It’s free entry and you can drop in anytime between 11am and 4pm. There’s the opportunity to see some of the many tenants at work in their studios and workshops, or take a guided tour of the building and take in the fantastic views from on top of the roof! We’ll have tea and cake, live music, stalls and vintage cutlery sales. Or why not join their "First Tuesday" tours on 5th August or 2nd September? St Paul’s Church, Wordsworth Avenue is a Grade II* Listed building, designed by Sir Basil Spence. We are opening the Church on the last Thursday morning of the month between 10-11.30am from June – October. Come and see us on 31st July or 28th August. We're also taking part in Heritage Open Days on Saturday 20th September from 11am to 3pm, when Dr Louise Hampson will share a 15-20 minute talk at 11am and 1pm about Sir Basil Spence, the architecture of the building and its design links with Coventry Cathedral. Learn about Painted Fabrics, Little Norton, where disabled ex-WW1 servicemen printed textiles for clothes and household items, at a walk around the site followed by a visit to the Memorial Room, Friday 8th August 2025 11am-1pm. Intangible heritage - communities to nominate UK traditions for new inventoryIn 2024 the UK Government ratified the UNESCO Convention on the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Communities across the UK will soon be able to nominate their favourite traditions to be included within official inventories of our living heritage. Read more about the plans to catalogue our vital intangible heritage, including poetry and storytelling, performance, festivals, customs, nature, the environment, crafts, sports, games and food. In a parallel initiative, Dave Clarke of Sheffield Hallam University is leading the National Folklore Survey. A draft questionnaire has been created using input from community focus groups in Sheffield, Hertfordshire and Todmorden. The final version will be completed by the IPSOS UK panel, a representative sample of 1730 adults in England.
