Publicising a heritage event and registering your group are now even easier

Got an event you'd like to publicise? Submit it to the JUHS website at https://www.joinedupheritagesheffield.org.uk/events. There's no need to register as a user - just complete and submit the form and our team will check and publish.

There are over 70 local heritage groups listed on the JUHS website, but we know there are many more all over the city. Make yours easier for supporters and visitors to find by visiting https://www.joinedupheritagesheffield.org.uk/groups, clicking Add Group and completing the form. No login needed.

JUHS bi-monthly meetings

For our upcoming bi-monthly meeting on Tuesday 25th November at 10:30am we are delighted to return as guests of the National Emergency Services Museum, in West Bar.

Chris Reece is an expert on music halls in Sheffield, and he will be our guest speaker, giving a talk entitled "Exploring the Circus, Theatres, Pubs and Brewery of Castlegate to West Bar". Don't miss this chance to hear insights into the popular entertainments enjoyed by the people of Sheffield. Chris will bring along his research, images and newspaper cuttings relating to the talk that people can see afterwards.

For our September bi-monthly meeting we returned to this lovely Grade II*-listed former horn works and home for a century to silver stamper Henry Leah and a varied array of craftspeople. Historian and embroiderer Rhiannon Thomas gave us a fascinating insight into her project "Mapping Meersbrook", combining historic map research and intricate stitched artworks. We also welcomed Francesca Frascina from Sheffield City Council who introduced a new feasibility project on the Central Library and Graves Gallery, focused on designing library, art gallery and other services for the future.

Can you help to save South Yorkshire Victorian and Edwardian Heritage?

South Yorkshire Victorian Society is recruiting for some new volunteer committee members to join the four existing committee members.

Could you be our Treasurer? We have a turnover of £1,700 a year and need bi-monthly income and expenditure accounts and very simple annual accounts.

Or do you have experience of preparing agendas and committee minutes and drafting correspondence? We have 6 - 8 meetings a year.

And we need someone to lead on our Social Media to support our campaigns and promote our walks and talks.

You don't need to be an expert in Victorian architecture - just someone who cares passionately about preserving it. Committee members will need to join the national Victorian Society if they aren't already members.

Sheffield City Council announces major extensions to Conservation Areas

From 14th October 2025 more historic areas in Sheffield have had statutory protection. The Council's Planning and Highways Committee approved recommendations that significantly enlarged both the City Centre and Kelham Island Industrial Conservation Areas. Castlegate, Devonshire Green and Neepsend are amongst the areas that will enjoy a legal duty to preserve or enhance their character or appearance. Ever since a consultation on a new Conservation Area for Castlegate was abruptly cancelled in 2019, JUHS and many other groups have campaigned for this additional protection. We're delighted that the Council has now listened, and the results speak for themselves.

The committee also resolved to request that the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee add the designation of the Wicker and Victoria Quays to their work programme, with the aim of this being acted upon earlier than the minimum three year horizon estimated by officers.

The Council's planning officers made this possible by bidding for and winning £165,000 funding from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and Historic England. Four more Conservation Areas (Endcliffe, Norton, Oaks Park and Ranmoor) will also receive new appraisals and management plans in the second phase of the project.

Conservation Area event Thursday 4th December

Draft Management Plans for the newly-extended City Centre and Kelham/Neepsend Conservation Areas will be shared at a drop-in session in the Silver Room at the Town Hall on Thursday 4th December 2025 from 12:30pm to 4:30pm.

Following the very welcome enlargement of protection for these historic areas, new Management Plans are being written. Don’t miss your chance to see proposals for how these areas will be managed in the future.
