Our guest speaker is Sally Rodgers, JUHS trustee and newly-appointed Engagement Officer at Sheffield's Archives and Local Studies Library. We are really looking forward to hearing from Sally about her new role and plans for ensuring that these hugely-valued resources become better-known, used and appreciated by more people from wider communities in the future.

At our last very well-attended bi-monthly in the newly-restored Leah’s Yard we heard from JUHS trustee Robin Hughes about the history of this important Grade II* listed site. JUHS bi-monthly meetings are open to all, whatever their interest in heritage. They are an opportunity to hear from local heritage groups about their work and a great chance to make connections and to discuss problems and opportunities for Sheffield’s heritage.

Abbeydale Picture House - can you help uncover its history?

Following the good news of a more secure future for the Grade II listed Abbeydale Picture House under the ownership of True North, they have engaged Prof. Vanessa Toulmin of the University of Sheffield as consultant. Vanessa is looking for historical information and images from this much-loved city treasure. Historical pictures of the interior will be especially welcome, to aid with the urgent programme of restoration and repair.

Sheffield City Council is boosting their conservation team

We are delighted to be able to announce that Sheffield City Council are advertising for a second Conservation Officer to join the very hardworking Neall Bower in the Planning team. JUHS and others have been arguing for some time that a city the size of Sheffield needs more resources to advise on planning applications, drive enforcement activity and raise awareness of heritage within Planning.

This is a step change from the position a few years ago when we were not sure that we would even retain a single Conservation Officer, and due credit is owed to officers and members at the Council for listening. It’s an important move forward which has been all the more challenging given the poor financial circumstances the Council finds itself in. It is also a very welcome vote of confidence in the value of the historic environment.

This is a different post to the Heritage Officer called for in the JUHS Heritage Strategy. That is still something that we are continuing to argue for, and we hope to have some news in the not-too-distant future.

Heritage information boards - looking for a supplier

Friends of Loxley Valley have secured funding for presentation boards and finger posts at the entry points to and at some of the historical sites along the valley. They need multiple quotations but are struggling to find suppliers.

Heritage Funding Directory

Thanks to support from the Historic Houses Foundation, The Heritage Alliance and The Architectural Heritage Fund combined their funding directories to provide around 400 updated listings detailing sources of grants from trusts and foundations, as well as organisations offering loan finance, awards, scholarships and other ‘in kind’ resources.

The Directory’s entries cover historic buildings, landscapes, parks and gardens, churchyards and cemeteries, industrial heritage, archives, historic churches, museums, archaeology, the environmental, heritage skills, conservation and more.

Share your stories of Sheffield work and community on camera in a new research project

Dr. Lizzy Craig-Atkins of the University of Sheffield would like to connect with South Yorkshire residents who are interested in sharing stories about their experiences of work and community in and around Sheffield in an on-camera interview.

'Untold Stories: Sheffield' will investigate how late twentieth-century deindustrialization impacted the city of Sheffield. If you're interested in taking part, email Lizzy at e.craig-atkins@sheffield.ac.uk. You can also read more on the JUHS website.

This is part of a research project she is co-running which will lead to a publication and an art exhibition at Wentworth Woodhouse next year where the interviews will be presented alongside new artwork by her collaborator Jennifer Vanderpool.

JUHS has been a partner in Lizzy's exciting Roots & Futures project for several years now, and we're looking forward to this latest initiative.
