JUHS bi-monthly meetings

We had another successful bi-monthly meeting at Abbeyfield House. Thanks to the Friends of Abbeyfield Park for making this possible, and for Tim Neal in particular for his engaging tour of this lovely but little-known building.

Our next bi-monthly meeting will be on Tuesday 22nd July at 10:30am, when we will visit the National Fairground and Circus Archive at the University of Sheffield's Western Bank Library. Attend in person or online for an introduction to the work of the archive and how to access its collection.

Heritage Open Days - be in time for the Sheffield brochure

Sheffield Heritage Open Days will run from 12th - 21st September 2025. Visit the Sheffield HODs website for full details.

If you are organising a venue or event and want to be included in the Sheffield printed brochure then the deadline for registration is 30th June.

Registrations are still possible after this date until 14th August. These will still be listed online but cannot be included in the printed brochure.

Registration is available at https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk.

Conservation Area consultation 9th June - 18th July

Public consultation on proposals for the City Centre and Kelham Island Conservation Areas, including extending the protected areas, begins on 9th June. We urge as many people as possible to have their say and give feedback on the proposals.

You can get involved in the following ways:

• 9-13th June 10-4pm - Display boards in Winter Gardens, 90 Surrey St, Sheffield S1 2LH.
• 24-27th June 10-4pm - Display boards in Kelham Island Museum, Alma St, Sheffield S3 8RY
• 18th  June - Bookable drop-in session with consultants and Design and Conservation Officers, in the Town Hall, Pinstone St, S1 2HH; contact conservation@sheffield.gov.uk
• 9th June - 18th July (6 weeks) - Documentation available online with an electronic form to submit responses. Alternative formats available on request.
• 9th June - 18th July 10-4pm (6  weeks) - Documentation available to look through at Sheffield City Council Office, First Point at Howden House, 1 Union Street, S1 2SH.

Birley Spa structure report

Birley Spa Preservation Trust (formerly Friends of Birley Spa) have sent us this update:

"The announcement of Birley Spa being featured in the 2025 Victorian Society Top Ten Endangered Buildings coincided with Sheffield City Council (who own the building) receiving the up to date Condition Survey report, which clearly validates its placing on that list. The report makes for grim reading, but nothing we hadn't expected.

"Despite one of the surveyors leaving the building somewhat ashen faced, it was apparent that the building is still structurally sound, but at a critical point, where repair and restoration are becoming a matter of urgency. Our surveyors are looking into funding options and we have a meeting with the Council to discuss the report and next steps. Hopefully the light at the end of the tunnel is finally getting brighter."

We at JUHS would like to congratulate Fiona Milne and everyone at BSPT for their Herculean efforts to preserve this unique building, and hope that this report marks a turning point in the battle to secure its future.

"Holberry" - reading of new historical play by Sheffield writer and historian David Price

"Holberry", a new historical play, will be performed as a dramatised play reading at Upper Chapel, Norfolk Street, Sheffield S1 2JD at 7pm on Saturday 21st June 2025.

Entry is free and no tickets are required, but there will be a retiring collection in aid of St Mark’s Church and Upper Chapel.

The play was written by David Price, author of Sheffield Troublemakers. It tells the story of a Chartist plot, led by a young ex-soldier called Samuel Holberry, to seize control of Sheffield on the night of 11-12th January 1840.
